What is the Sleep Medicine Certification Exam?

Who is eligible to take the ABIM Certification Exam?

Physicians who have completed an accredited sleep medicine fellowship or have completed specific sleep medicine training through an ACGME-accredited fellowship program in another medical specialty are eligible to take the exam. What dates and deadlines do I need to know? 

The 2024 ABIM exam will be held October 10, 2024. Registration is available December 1, 2023, through June 15, 2024, with late registration available from June 16, 2024, through June 28, 2024.  

What is the format of the ABIM Exam?

The exam is a computer-based test, consisting of single-answer multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The questions assess your clinical knowledge, diagnostic abilities, and therapeutic management skills in sleep medicine. 

What are the main subject areas covered in the ABIM exam?

The certification exam covers a wide range of sleep-related topics, including sleep physiology, sleep disorders in adults and children, polysomnography and sleep monitoring, sleep pharmacology, and management of sleep disorders.   • Normal Sleep and Variants 16%

How long is the exam, and how many questions does it have?  

The exam consists of 240 single-best-answer multiple choice questions. Of these, about 40 are new and do not count towards your final score. 

Exam day can be a long one, for a maximum of 10 hours. There are 4 testing sessions, each up to 60 questions. You will receive 100 minutes of available break time, and you are free to space out your breaks between sessions as needed. For example, if you take a 20-minute break after Session 1, you will have 80 remaining minutes of break time remaining for the day.  

What is the passing score for the ABIM Certification Exam? 

The passing score is determined by the ABIM, and typically varies from one exam administration to another based on the performance of the group of candidates being tested. 

In 2023, the ABIM exam saw an overall pass rate of 94%.
