How long is the Orthopedic Surgery Board Exam?
The Orthopedic Surgery Board Exam is offered byAmerican Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) andAmerican Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery (AOBOS). Both are administered on a computer. The rest format of the exam varies depending on which board you seek certification from.
The ABOS Certification exam is one day long. You have 8 hours to take the exam, and a 40-minute break, and an allotted 20 minutes for a tutorial of the exam. In this time you will be required to answer 310-320 multiple-choice questions.
The AOBOS Certification exam is half a day long. During this time you will be required to answer 250 multiple-choice questions. The examination is 250 questions and multiple-choice.

AOBOS Board Exam Requirements
According to the AOBOS candidate handbook, those who wish to apply for certification need an unrestricted license to practice and have five years of AOA-approved training in orthopedic surgery. The applicant must also provide documentary evidence that he/she has performed a minimum of 200 major orthopedic procedures of his/her own responsibility over a period of at least 12 consecutive months.
All applicants must also have ample documented evidence to prove that they have completed a minimum of 200 major orthopedic procedure during at least 12 months.
