Surgeons save thousands of lives everyday. We’re fortunate to work with so many great medical professionals and hear their stories.
Meet Debb, a breast surgeon committed to helping patients lead a happy and healthy life. We loved learning more about her background and learning about what a typical day looks like.
Name: Debb Farr
Profession: Breast Surgeon
Location: UT Southwestern. Dallas, TX
Where did you study?
I went to medical school at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and I completed my residency in general surgery at Southern Illinois University in Springfield IL. I then did a breast surgical oncology fellowship at Northwestern University.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day either consists of seeing breast cancer patients in the clinic or performing surgery (mastectomies and lumpectomies).
What’s the most rewarding part of your day?
It’s always wonderful to see a woman back in the clinic after surgery with favorable pathology and a great cosmetic result. I also love to work with residents and students.
What is the hardest part of your day?
It is always difficult to tell a patient and their family that the tumor was larger or more aggressive than predicted.
Can you tell us about a favorite career moment?
As I have recently finished my training, I think my favorite career moment is ahead of me! Thus far, however, it has been a privilege to work with and train under the surgeons at SIU and Northwestern.
What does being a surgeon mean to you?
As a breast surgeon, we have the opportunity to serve women during a difficult and vulnerable time in their lives. In the operating room I like to strive for the best result I can give.
What advice would you give to an aspiring surgeon?
Seek out a mentor in your field and learn as much as you can from them. For me, this made all the difference.
